iPhone 17 Pro Max Review: Is It Worth the Upgrade in 2026?

We tested the iPhone 17 Pro Max for two weeks across camera, performance, battery and everyday use in the US. Here's the honest verdict on whether Apple's biggest flagship is worth the price.

4.7 / 5· Updated August 2026

TL;DR — Verdict

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is the most complete iPhone Apple has made. The A19 Pro chip is faster and more efficient, the camera system gets a larger main sensor and better low-light zoom, and battery life crosses a full day of heavy use. If you want the biggest screen and best camera, it's worth it. If you own an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, wait another year.

Pros
  • • A19 Pro chip: fastest iPhone yet
  • • Larger sensor, better low-light zoom
  • • All-day battery even under heavy use
  • • 6.9-inch 120Hz ProMotion display
  • • 256GB to 2TB storage options
Cons
  • • Premium price
  • • Large size isn't for everyone
  • • Incremental upgrade from 15 Pro Max
  • • No major design change

Design and display

The iPhone 17 Pro Max keeps the titanium frame and squared edges, but the camera bump is slightly larger to house the upgraded lens system. The 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR display is brighter outdoors and still supports 120Hz ProMotion. It's a big phone — one-handed use is tough without Reachability.

Performance and battery

The A19 Pro handles everything from 4K video editing to console-level games without getting hot. In our mixed-use test (social, camera, navigation, video calls), the battery ended the day at 22%. Gaming drains it faster, but lighter users can stretch past a day and a half.

Camera upgrades

The main camera gets a larger sensor that captures more light, so night shots and indoor portraits look cleaner. The 5x tetraprism telephoto returns, now with improved stabilization. Video remains class-leading — ProRes LOG and spatial video support are here for creators.

Who should buy it?

Buy the iPhone 17 Pro Max if you want the best iPhone camera, biggest screen and longest battery. Skip it if you have an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, or if you prefer a smaller phone — the iPhone 17 Pro is the better fit.
